Prep, Prime and Paint: Interior

Wood

Floors/Stained and-or Clear Coated/To Be Stained or Clear Coated

a. Surface Preparation:

  • treat any mildew with a 3:1 water:household bleach mixture, leaving it on for 20 minutes and adding more as it dries; wear eye and skin protection; rinse thoroughly
  • remove cracking, loose or poorly adhering coating by scraping; wear eye protection, cloth work gloves, and a dust mask; then dull any glossy areas by sanding with medium grit (#120) garnet paper, and remove as much clear coating as possible (all clear coating must be removed if applying a stain); wear eye protection and dust mask
  • remove all dirt by scrubbing with detergent and warm water, rinse thoroughly; pay special attention to kitchen areas (accumulated airborne cooking oils) and around switches and door knobs (hand prints and oils)

b. Priming:

  • priming is not done if applying a stain or clear coating

c. Staining and Clear Coating

  • if staining, apply an oil-based wiping stain (conventional or gel type) that is recommended for use on floors, following manufacturer's directions; then, after an over night dry, apply a clear coating recommended for use on floors
  • for a clear coating apply polyurethane matte, semigloss or gloss finish; or an oil-finish or latex or oil-based gym floor finish

*IMPORTANT: immediately dispose of rags and paper soaked with oil-based material (stain, primer, paint, clear coating, etc.) by either spreading them open in a safe place to dry, or by putting into in a fireproof container with lid; otherwise they can catch fire by themselves if left wadded up
