Prep, Prime and Paint: Interior

Wood

Floors/Bare Wood/To Be Stained and Clear Coated

a. Surface Preparation:

  • treat any mildew with a 3:1 water:household bleach mixture, leaving it on for 20 minutes and adding more as it dries; wear eye and skin protection; rinse thoroughly
  • dull any glossy areas of wood ("mill glaze") by sanding with medium (#120) grit garnet paper; wear eye protection, dust mask and work gloves
  • fill any gouges or splits with wood filler; let dry and sand flush
  • remove any dirt by scrubbing with detergent and water; rinse thoroughly; let dry out
  • sand smooth, any rough areas with medium (#120) grit garnet paper; wear eye protection, dust mask and work gloves; then vacuum clean the entire area;

b. Priming:

  • priming is not done if applying a stain or clear coating

c. Staining and Clear Coating

  • if staining, apply an oil-based wiping stain (conventional or gel type) that is recommended for use on floors, following manufacturerÍs directions; then, after an over night dry, apply a clear coating recommended for use on floors
  • for a clear coating apply polyurethane matte, semigloss or gloss finish; or an oil-finish or latex or oil-based gym floor finish

*IMPORTANT: immediately dispose of rags and paper soaked with oil-based material (stain, primer, paint, clear coating, etc.) by either spreading them open in a safe place to dry, or by putting into in a fireproof container with lid; otherwise they can catch fire by themselves if left wadded up
